Application Process

The EILC kindly requests that all individuals or organizations who are interested in the EILC's legal assistance complete the above application for legal services to begin the application process. Individuals or organizations who call or email the EILC, and who are not a prospective client or client of theEEILC, will be requested to complete the above application if they have not done so already. The Law Clinic front desk will be happy to assist you in completing this application by phone or in person if for any reason you are unable to do so on your own computer.

The EILC typically reviews applications received between April 1 through Oct. 1 in mid-October, and reviews applications received after Oct. 1 through April 1 in mid-April. The EILC maintains an applicant waitlist and accepts applicants as prospective clients from the waitlist unless applicants request to be removed. We regret that we are unable to provide applicants with updates on the status of any application or any further information, unless and until you are notified that your application is accepted as a prospective client of the EILC.

The EILC reviews all applications for fit and need, and invites selected applicants to conduct an intake with the EILC in January and September of each year. Applicants become prospective clients only upon completing an intake interview with the EILC, at which time each prospective client is placed on the EILC's waitlist for representation.

Representation can begin at any time depending on when a spot in the clinic opens, after the EILC confirms that a prospective client does not pose a conflict of interest to its current or former clients, among other considerations. Prospective clients become clients of the EILC only upon signing a Letter of Engagement with the EILC that sets forth the scope of work to be completed by the EILC on behalf of the client.

Due to the volume of applications for legal assistance that the EILC receives and the EILC’s limited capacity, we regret that most inquiries for immediate legal assistance cannot be met. Depending on when an application is received relative to the April 1 or Oct. 1 application review period, the typical wait time for an application to be reviewed by the EILC can be several days or six months. Each semester, approximately 3-6 applicants are selected from all previously reviewed applications (not only applications received in the immediately preceding six months) to become a prospective client of the EILC and conduct an intake. After conducting an intake with the EILC and becoming a prospective client, representation can begin when a spot in the clinic opens and other conditions of representation are met. Due to the length of the application process, applicants are encouraged to consider their long-term legal services needs when requesting the EILC's assistance.

While your application for the EILC's legal services is pending, the EILC welcomes applicants to attend its free programming open to the public.
